Shortly after the debut of its exceptionally well-engineered 300-series sedan in 1951, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a sporting version, the 300 S. This new variant bridged the gap between the four-door 300 and the much-anticipated upcoming 300 SL sports car; its chassis was shortened by 25 centimeters and mounted with an uprated 3.0-liter inline-six with a trio of Solex carburetors and boosted compression ratio, producing a healthy 150 horsepower. Three coachbuilt body styles were available: a coupe, a cabriolet with a traditional fully insulated soft-top, and a roadster, with a top that folded flush with the body when lowered for an extremely clean look.

Exclusivity was assured, as the extremely costly 300 S sold only 560 copies between 1952 and 1958, to an impressive roster of clients that included Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, and the Aga Khan. Today the model is still considered one of the finest European luxury cars of its era, and one of the last truly hand-made automobiles that carried the Classic Era traditions firmly into the modern age.

The car offered here was one of just 141 300 S roadsters built. Reportedly delivered new in Europe, equipped with a Becker Nürburg radio, it reportedly was converted to the present, very rare floor-shifted configuration—a more sporting arrangement similar to that used on the 300 SL coupes and roadsters—during its early years. It made its way to the United States during the 1950s and in 1959 was acquired by a Mr. Weil of Northern California. The car would remain a prized possession of the Weil family for three generations and 63 years, and it was then acquired by the consignor in early 2022.

In current ownership, it was elected to have Fast Car Ltd., of Redondo Beach, California, perform a major mechanical service and some cosmetic refurbishing. As part of this work, the engine was removed and re-sealed, a new top crafted and installed, and the carpeting replaced. Nonetheless, the lovely patina from the prior long-term ownership remains intact—albeit now with the benefit of recent service work from this well-regarded facility. The car is accompanied by a set of original Karl Baisch pigskin fitted luggage, spare parts kit, and service manual.

This is a lovely, and indeed well-loved, 300 S.
